Green Day to Rework "21 Guns" with Musical Cast
Green Day have hit the studio this week to record a new version of their single "21 Guns" with the cast of American Idiot, the hit musical based on the band's 2004 album.
Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is handling production duties on the track, which is expected to head to radio by November's end. The updated single will also be offered up in a digital format online.
The band is pulling out the stops for the revised tune, as they're also planning to film a video for the song with the musical's cast.
The stage version of American Idiot premiered to rave reviews at Berkeley Repertory Theatre on September 4th, and was extended beyond its initial run due to the unprecedented demand for seats and record-breaking sales.
Additionally, the San Jose Mercury News called the musical "the hottest fall theatre ticket," and recently the band announced that the production was heading for Broadway in 2010.
The album is brought to life by Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer, who previously gained accolades for his work on Spring Awakening.
"21 Guns," the second single from Green Day's latest effort, 21st Century Breakdown, has sold over a million downloads, earning it a platinum status. The initial video also picked up high honors at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, earning "Best Rock Video."
